Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Bryn Redhead

The mantra for your 2013 Edmonton Prospects is simple, best season ever!

A step to accomplishing this feat is by bringing in some quality players from right here in Alberta.

Last season, he led his Junior College team (the Rainy River Community College located in International Falls, Minnesota) in team batting average at .338.

Without further adieu, I introduce you to Bryn Redhead.

Name:  Bryn Redhead Nickname: Brynner

Hometown:  Leduc, Alberta

What do you feel are your strengths in the game of baseball?  How do you think this will help the Prospects prosper in the new season?

Being able to play any type of role, on both sides of the ball and being able to think the game.

I just hope to bring my skills to the table this summer and help the Prospects win in whatever role I play.

Position: Utility based
Split time behind the plate and at 3rd base last year for my Junior College.  Spent all of my time behind the plate for my summer team.  This year I will split time behind the plate and at first base with some time in the outfield when needed.

When did you start playing organized baseball? Have played organized since I was 5

Favorite MLB team? Blue Jays

Who was your favorite MLB player growing up? Ken Griffey JR

Who is your favorite MLB player currently? Brett Lawrie

First thing you will buy after signing a million dollar contract?  I would buy my parents plane tickets to my first game.

What's in the game console right now? The Show 2012, my roommates/teammates and I have some pretty heated battles.

Favorite Movie? Slap Shot

If you could be a superhero, what would your superpower be?  I would like to have super brain powers and be ridiculously smart.

Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Dwight Mack

Your 2013 Edmonton Prospects look to learn from the experiences of years past and reward our fans patience by the making the upcoming season, the best season yet!

Prospects General Manager Tracy Neumann and new Head Coach Cameron McMullen have their first roster player signed and his name is Dwight Mack.

Mack, from the North Dakota baseball program, comes with the following accolades:
  1. 2011 American Legion state champion
  2. 2011 Class A First Team All-State selection
  3.  2012 & 2011 All-Western Dakota Association selection
  4. 2012 Class A state champion.
The following is a transcript of an interview between Dwight Mack and myself.

 Name: Dwight Mack Nickname: Wighty

Hometown: Mandan, North Dakota

What do you feel are your strengths in the game of baseball?  How do you think this will help the Prospects prosper in the new season?

I have always felt that my strengths come on the offensive side of the baseball. Being a left handed hitter sure gives me some advantages. Through the past couple years I have hit in the 2, 3, or 4 spot which usually carries a very big role. The last two seasons of playing American Legion baseball I hit just shy of .400 and this previous season nearly .450 also leading our team to a state championship in 2011.

I think this will help the Prospects in a lot of ways. Offense is a very big part of the game. If we can score runs then winning games will just take care of itself.

Primary Position: Catcher

Secondary Position: I spent a lot of time at 3rd this last summer while recovering from a broken thumb.

When did you start playing organized baseball? Just after I turned 4 years old.

Favorite MLB team growing up?  When I was little I loved watching the Los Angeles Angels

Favorite MLB team now? I normally don’t pick favorites when it comes to professional sports but if I had to I would go with the Minnesota Twins.

Who was your favorite MLB player growing up?  Darin Erstad was always my favorite player.

Who is your favorite MLB player currently?   When Erstad retired I began following Joe Mauer beings he is a catcher like myself and a quite successful one I might add.

Fun Stuff

First thing you will buy after signing a million dollar contract?  The first thing I will buy with a million dollar contract is a 1969 Chevelle SS.

What's in the game console right now?  In the game console right now happens to be Super Mario Kart. Me and my teammates have a lot of good clean fun trash talking while on the race track.

Favorite Movie? Either be Miracle (1980 USA Miracle on ice) or For Love of the Game.

If you could be a superhero, what would your superpower be?  If I could have a super power it would be to fly. There are so many things we could do if we could get up and fly with the birds.

This is it, your LAST chance to watch LIVE baseball

The opportunity to sit in the friendly confines of Telus Field and tan while enjoying a cold beverage is an under-rated experience.  The simple FACT is that being at a baseball game with friends and/or family, their are always more conversations with one another at the ballpark than their would be at home or at a restaurant.

This Friday and Saturday marks the end of your Edmonton Prospects home schedule.  A home schedule that included not one but two thrilling extra inning wins.  The first versus Moose Jaw, the second versus the recently crowned President Trophy (best regular season record) winners, the Regina Red Sox.

Only 2 home games remaining

The last week of the 2012 edition of the Edmonton Prospects is underway.  As is the case in most sports, the last week of play always means a couple new faces in the lineup.

One of the new faces in our Prospects lineup is OF Connor Girrard.  Girrard opened the game with a single and would later score staking our Prospects to 1-0 lead to start last nights game vs Okotoks.

Girrard would be back in the thick of things in the 3rd inning, hitting another single and once again crossing the plate for our Prospects.  Once again, it was 3B Chase Kuehl knocking him home.

Our Prospects would lead the game 3-2 after 3 innings but would go on to lose 8-5.

A pat on the back is in order for another new face in the Prospects lineup last night.  Relief pitcher Mitch St. Laurent pitched 3 scoreless innings!

NEXT UP

Our Prospects travel to Medicine Hat for games on Wednesday and Thursday night.

It's almost here: TOONIE TUESDAY

For the first time since June 26th through June 28th, our Edmonton Prospects are enjoying back-to-back days off.  Here is hoping the much needed rest is enough for our Prospects to earn their first win in the month of July.

Remember folks, this is college baseball, so while the bump and bruises are the same as the Major Leagues, many of these young men are also dealing with being homesick.  With only 3 players being from Edmonton, about half the team consists of transplanted Americans.

That is why I always call Telus Field "the friendly confines".  Prospect fans have always been loud and proud.  Prospect fans have embraced this baseball club and looked past the win-loss column.

Thank you!

So Close

Our Edmonton Prospects put up a good fight against the tied for first place in our division Okotoks Dawgs.  With a statement like that you know there's a "but" and here it comes!  But, after coming back from a 5-2 deficit, our Prospects would lose 6-5 after the Dawgs broke the tie in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Down 1-0 going into the top of the second, 2B Miles Shelton Jr collected an RBI single to tie the game.  SS Tanner Knutson would take advantage of an error by the Dawgs shortstop and would come home to put our boys up 2-1.  The lead was short lived as the Dawgs would put up four runs in the bottom half the second.

Our Prospects would tie the game in the 7th after loading the bases with nobody out.  RF Cody Kielsa would hit an RBI single, DH Matthew Miller would score on a passed ball and lastly 3B Chase Kuehl would hit a sac fly.

NEXT GAME

Tonight versus the other team tied for 1st place in our division, the Medicine Hat Mavericks (23-12).
First pitch in Medicine Hat is scheduled for 7:05PM.

Your scheduled starter for the Prospects is Stinson Ott (1-4).

Travelling through the Division

After a much needed day off, our Edmonton Prospects (6-26) begin a 6 day road tour through our division.  The road trip is scheduled to start tonight in Okotoks versus the Dawgs, but Environment Canada is calling for showers all day in Okotoks.  Hopefully our boys can get the game played and collect the club's first win for the month of July.

After tonight's game in Okotoks, our Prospects travel to Medicine Hat for a two game set, then finish the week with a three game set in Lethbridge.

Afternoon games are for Slumpbustin!

The last words heard leaving Telus Field last night were "Your Athlete's Nation Prospect's player of the game is Ethan Sterkel"

In the top of the 2nd inning, Sterkel gets my vote for the catch of the season! On a fly ball fading toward the foul line, Sterkel put on the superman cape and dove for the ball catching it the instant before he crashed onto the ground.

Then in the top of the 4th inning, Sterkel would hit a ball of the base of the wall, and while he was tagged out trying to make it a triple, he would knock in the Prospects 5th run of game giving our boys a 5-3 lead.

Unfortunately, the turning point of this game was the bottom of the 5th inning.  That is when our Prospects, with only one out, would load the bases and strand them all.  In the Yellow Jackets next turn at bat, during the top of the 6th inning, they would score three taking the lead at 6-5.

Down 8-5 going into the bottom of the 9th, the comeback attempt was valiant but fell short.  With two out, 2B Miles Shelton Jr would knock home the Prospects 6th run of the game.  DH Kevin Czarnecki, who already had 2 RBI on this night, represented the tying run but would strikeout to end the game.

THIS AFTERNOON'S GAME

The Saskatoon Yellow Jackets (13-18) provide the competition for our Prospects again this afternoon.

With our Prospects in the midst of a 12 game losing streak, we are our asking our Twitter family for some help.  Please tweet the following hashtag, #slumpbuster before you come out to the ballpark this afternoon.  Our boys have been working hard and losing some tough games lately, maybe the little extra bit of love is all they need.

2nd Last Homestand Begins Tonight

Maybe the vaunted luck of "Friday the 13th" is just what our Prospects need to break out of their 11 game losing streak.

Our Prospects again came close last night, leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the 7th inning.  Then back to back four run innings by Moose Jaw ruined what was a good first start by Brandon Compton.

TONIGHT'S GAME

The Saskatoon Yellow Jackets (12-18) will be our guests at Telus Field for our Prospects.  Both the Yellow Jackets and Prospects played in Saskatchewan yesterday, so both teams will be playing after long bus rides today.  First pitch is at 7:05PM

Craig George (0-2 5.26 ERA) will be your Prospects Starting Pitcher tonight.

SATURDAY MATINEE

Your Prospects host the Yellow Jackets on Saturday July 14 at 2:05 PM.

Tanner Knutson (1-1 2.18 ERA) is your scheduled Prospects Starting Pitcher.

Better days ahead

Your Edmonton Prospects losing streak has hit 10.  After building up a 8-0 lead last night in Moose Jaw, a 3 run walk-off homerun by the Miller Express would break the hearts of Prospects players and fans.

BETTER DAYS ARE AHEAD

Tonight, Brandon Compton is handed the ball for his 1st start as a member of your Edmonton Prospects.  Compton has made 13 relief appearances for 17 2/3 innings played racking up 14 strikeouts.

Tonight's game in Swift Current, finishes off the 4 game season series between the Prospects and the Indians.  The road team has won every game so far.

2B Miles Shelton Jr looks to extend his hit steak to 7 games.

Sunday Night Baseball

The string of playing teams tied for first place in their respective divisions continues tonight at Telus Field for your Edmonton Prospects.  The Swift Current Indians provide the competition for our Prospects on Monday as well. Both games start at 7:05PM.

Previously this season, the Prospects defeated the Indians 7-4.

Tonight's Prospects Starting Pitcher is Stinson Ott (1-2 4.56 ERA).  Ott's victory was against these very same Swift Current Indians.  The pitching story of the win versus the Indians though was our bullpen!  Tanner Knutson and Brandon Compton combined for 4 and 2/3 innings of 1 hit baseball.

6 different Prospects earned RBI in the victory versus Swift Current.  CF Grant Glasser led the way with 2 RBI.  Glasser and C Jamie Mitchell both went 3 for 5 at the plate.

HOMEWORK HAS ITS REWARDS

The best part of summer holidays for the kids is not having to get up on Monday morning.  The Prospects want to help you get them to sleep in on Monday morning.

Ask your child(ren) to write a 8 word "essay" about  who is their favorite Edmonton Prospect.  It is summer vacation so here is the first 6 words:

My favorite Edmonton Prospect Player is

Saturday Night's are for Baseball

Living in Edmonton, one understands that from October through April, Saturday night's are reserved for hockey.

Today is the 1st Saturday of July and Environment Canada is forecasting a +29 day.  That's baseball weather at its finest and Telus Field is one of the finest ballparks in all of Alberta! You do not need to be a diehard baseball fan to enjoy an Edmonton Prospects game.  All you need to do is like hot weather and cold beverages, we will do the rest for you!!

TONIGHT'S GAME

The re-match versus the division leading Medicine Hat Mavericks begins at 7:05PM.  Medicine Hat won the opener last night but their are reasons to believe tonight will be OUR night.

Your starting pitcher for the Edmonton Prospects is Craig George.  George (0-1) has an ERA of 3.20 which ranks 15th best overall in the league.  In just under 20 innings played, George has only issued 3 walks!!

Our offence had 3 notable names missing from the lineup last night (rest/flu) in RF Ethan Sterkel, LF Brandon Bufton and 3B Chase Kuehl.

Sterkel is your Prospect team leader in batting average with an astounding .412 average.  His batting average is tied for 2nd overall in the league.

Bufton is among a three way tie for leader on your Prospects with 11 RBI.

Kuehl is among a two way tie for leader on your Prospects with 4 doubles.

NUGGET

CF Grant Glasser extended his hitting streak to 10 games!

REMINDER

If you had tickets to the rained out game this past July 3rd, you can redeem them for any remaining Prospect home game including tonight.

9 reasons you NEED be at Telus Field TONIGHT

1) Their are only 9 opportunities left to see your Prospects play this season.  This weekend covers 4 of those opportunities starting tonight versus Medicine Hat!! All games start at 7:05PM.

2) Tonight is Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark!  Our humble way to honour & pay memory to the number of fallen Canadian soldiers from the war in Afghanistan.

3) In games the day after playing the Okotoks Dawgs (who defeated our Prospects last night), our Prospects are 2-0!

4) RF Ethan Sterkel looks to regain 1st place in the WMBL batting average race.  Sterkel is currently sporting a .412 average.  Last time Sterkel faced Medicine Hat, he went 2 for 4.

5) CF Grant Glasser, for the second time this season, is on a 9 game hitting streak.  In two meetings against Medicine Hat, Glasser is 4 for 8.  You want to be there live when the streak goes into double digits!

6) Prospects Pitcher Aubrey DeZarn (1-3 6.75 ERA) makes his return to the starting rotation tonight.  DeZarn spent two weeks on bullpen duty where he found his game!  In five relief appearances, DeZarn held his opponent scoreless in four of those games including powerhouse offences like the Regina Red Sox and the Medicine Hat Mavericks (tonight's opponent).

7) Tonight will be the last chance you have to use your Australian accent at Telus Field.  Catcher Jarryd Klemm, a native of Australia, will be returning to his Midget AAA team in Fort McMurray after tonight's game.  In nine games played, Klemm accumulated 1 Homerun and 9 RBI while sporting a .265 batting average. Good luck Jarryd!

8) When checking out the Prospects merchandise, pick up our information sheets about group outings to a Prospects Game.  Also pick up our information sheet about our special offer to all fans who celebrate a birthday in July!  Be the hero the beats summer boredom and suggests a night at Telus Field to watch Prospects baseball!!

9) Singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" only works if you are at the ballpark!!

Great game, wrong result

Most Hollywood directors will not come out with a script more outrageous and more entertaining than what happened at Telus Field last night!!

Going into the bottom of the 3rd inning, our Prospects were trailing 12-0.  That is not a typo, it is actually the numeral twelve.  Fear not, our Propsects would be leading 13-12 after 4 innings.

Going into the 9th inning with the game tied at 13, the Weyburn Beavers would score twice in the top half.  Try as they might, the second comeback of the night fell just short as our Prospects would lose the game 15-14.

SCORING SUMMARY

LF Brandon Bufton would put the Prospects on the board with a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 3rd.  Later in the same inning, C Jarryd Klemm would hit a 2 RBI double then cross the plate himself when 1B Markus Fergusson would single him home.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, with the bases loaded, RF Ethan Sterkel would clear the bases with a triple.  Two pitches later, Klemm would drive in Sterkel.  With the bases once again loaded in the fourth, 2B Cody Kielsa would earn a painful RBI getting plunked by a pitch.  CF Grant Glasser would earn two RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Glasser would hit his 1st Homerun of the season in the bottom of the ninth to close out the scoring.

NUGGETS

Our Prospects have 2 hitters on hitting streaks.  CF Grant Glasser is at 8 games while 3B Chase Kuehl is at 5 games.

LF Ethan Sterkel has now reached the WMBL minimum at-bats requirement to be included league statistics.  That mentioned, Sterkel has the 3rd highest batting average in the league at .452.

NEXT GAME

The re-match goes tonight at Telus Field at 7:05PM.

Bull Rushed

Our Edmonton Prospects (6-15) would lose both ends of doubleheader yesterday in Lethbridge against the Bulls (13-10).

Our Prospects would lose the afternoon game of the doubleheader by the score of 10-3.  The Prospects would open the scoring in the game but the Bulls would put up runs in each of the first seven innings to salt this game away.

3B Chase Kuehl would collect a RBI in the 1st and 6th inning cashing in CF Grant Glasser both times.  In the 9th inning, LF Jamie Mitchell would hit his 1st homerun of the season.

Our Prospects would lose the evening game of the doubleheader by the score of 9-6.  Our Prospects would again open the scoring in the game only to see the Bulls build a 7-1 lead.  Our Prospects nearly stole this game in the 8th inning putting up 5 runs but would fall short in the comeback bid.

The combo of 3B Chase Kuehl and CF Grant Glasser would again account for the first two runs of the game for our Prospects.  RF Ethan Sterkel would send home SS Kevin Czarnecki and 3B Kuehl then 1B Jarryd Klemm would hit his 1st homerun of the season to round out our Prospects scoring.

NUGGET

CF Grant Glasser extended his hitting streak to 7 and his stolen base per game streak to 6.

HOME GAME TONIGHT AND TOMORROW

The Weyburn Beavers (8-16) pay a visit to lovely Telus Field tonight and Tuesday.

Aubrey DeZarn (1-2 6.00 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound tonight for the 7:05 start.

Prospects Win! Happy Canada Day!

All that starts well, ends well.  After jumping out a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning of play, your Prospects (6-13) would defeat the Regina Red Sox (17-4) in 11 innings last night by the score of 5-4.

CF Grant Glasser, extending his hit streak to 5 games, would start the game off with a single then a steal of 2nd base, extending his stolen base game streak to 4!  3B Chase Keuhl would drive Glasser home to open the scoring.  RF Ethan Sterkel, who's 9 game hitting streak would come to end tonight, would reach 1st base on an error allowing 2B Cody Kielsa to score the 2nd Prospect run of the night. C Jarryd Klemm would triple to bring Sterkel home making it 3-0 for our Prospects at the end of 1 inning.

After 5 innings of keeping the third highest scoring team in the league off the scoresheet, the Red Sox finally were able to solve Prospects Starting Pitcher Craig George in the 6th inning.  The 6th inning would not only be the first time the Red Sox would score but also the first time the Red Sox had a runner advance past second base.

George would see his Prospects offence get the run back in the bottom half of the 6th when 1B Dustin Sandberg would double sending home 3B Chase Keuhl and re-storing the 3 run lead at 4-1.  George would leave in the top of the 7th but deserves a pat on the back for another strong start!

Another pat on the back goes to Prospects Pitcher Aubrey DeZarn!  Coming into the game in the bottom of the 8th, and just after the Red Sox had tied the game at 4, DeZarn would slam the door shut.  DeZarn would get the final two outs of the inning and would not allow a Red Sox runner past second base the rest of the night.  For his 3 and 2/3 innings of work, DeZarn would pick up his first victory of the season.

Despite having to face the WMBL's best starting pitcher, Daniel Jones, in an inning of relief, AND the Red Sox dominant closer in Nick Huff, our Prospects were able to send the Telus Field faithful home happy in the 11th inning.

LF Jamie Mitchell would single driving in C Jarryd Klemm to give the Prospects the 5-4 victory.  The victory celebration from Mitchell would include 2 backflips!!

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Our Prospects play a day/night doubleheader in Lethbridge (11-10) versus the Bulls.  Currently, the Bulls are the team to catch in the playoff race, so managing at least a split today is vital.

Stinson Ott (1-1 3.79 ERA) is scheduled to pitch Game 1 at 2:05PM.  Markus Fergusson (1-0 3.95 ERA) is scheduled to pitch Game 2 at 7:35PM.

Your Prospects return home on Monday July 2nd and Tuesday July 3rd to play the Weyburn Beavers (8-15).  Contact Erin erauf@mbsab.com or at 780-239-9127 for group rates and Luxury Box Suites rental.

Unlucky 13

It was a game that featured 5 lead changes, what should have been called a steal of home plate, and over 4 hours of entertainment!!  In the end, your Edmonton Prospects (5-13) would fall to the league leading Regina Red Sox (17-3) in 13 innings by the score of 8-7.

Edmonton Prospects starting pitcher Cashtyn DeLeeuw (1-2 5.70 ERA), much like the Red Sox starter Eaton, would struggle through the first 3 innings as the game sat at 5-5 after 3 innings.  DeLeeuw would settle down pitching strong 4th and 5th innings while dancing out of a loaded bases jam in the 6th inning to leave the game with a 6-5 lead.

After the Red Sox tied it in the top of the 7th, DH Jarryd Klemm would be the story of the bottom of the 7th.  After reaching base with a single, Klemm would steal second and then advance to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  Then, running on movement on a 2-1 count, the Red Sox pitcher threw a 75 foot bouncer to the plate (being called a wild pitch) and Klemm would be able to score the go ahead run making it 7-6 for our Prospects.

Prospects Relief Pitcher Tanner Knutson would come into the game in the 9th and with 1 out allow the game tying run to the Red Sox.  Knutson then deserves a pat on the back for slamming the door shut as he would hold the Red Sox hitless for the next 3 innings.

The Red Sox would score the top of the 13th and their dominant closer, Nick Huff, slammed the door shut in the bottom half to seal the loss for our boys.

Scoring Summary:

In the first inning, down 2-0, 3B Chase Keuhl (playing in front of visiting family and friends) would single and then aided by a Red Sox error, SS Kevin Czarnecki would cross the plate for our Prospects.  RF Ethan Sterkel, extending his hit streak to 9, would single scoring Kuehl and tying the game at 2.

The Prospects would take the lead in the 2nd inning when 2B Miles Shelton Jr would bring home DH Jarryd Klemm.

Down 5-3 in the 3rd inning, our Prospects would load the bases with nobody out.  DH Jarryd Klemm and 1B Ryan Kosolofski would each bring home a run to once again tie the game.

In the 5th inning, SS Miles Shelton Jr would pick up his 2nd RBI of the night when he singled driving home Kosolofski once again.  Shelton Jr also gets credit for the defensive play of the day when he climbed the invisible ladder and flat out robbed the Red Sox of a hit.

NUGGET:

The Prospects and Red Sox are back at tonight at 7:05PM at Telus Field.  Craig George (0-1 3.38 ERA) takes the mound for our Prospects.

Big Test For Our Boys

Our Edmonton Prospects (5-12) return to action Friday night at Telus Field after a rain assisted three day hiatus.  Waiting for them will be the Regina Red Sox (16-3).

The Red Sox are such a good team, in part, due to their balance.  Their offence and pitching rank top three in practically every statistical category but our Prospects will avoid one of their best players.  Red Sox Starting Pitcher Daniel Jones (5-0 0.49 ERA) just pitched Wednesday likely making him unavailable for our games this weekend.

An area of our Prospects game that has been steadily improving has been our starting pitching.  Cashtyn DeLeeuw (1-2 6.75 ERA) will start on Friday night while Craig George (0-1 3.38 ERA) will take the mound on Saturday.

Offensively speaking, our Prospects lead off hitter CF Grant Glasser has done everything you can ask of from a baseball player.  Glasser leads the team in  Runs Scored (11), Triples (2), RBI (8), Walks (11), and Stolen Bases (8).

The hottest Prospect player of late has been RF Ethan Sterkel who since last Tuesday has gone 18 for 27 raising his batting average to a mind-blowing .561!!

While one hopes the days off do not stifle Sterkel, one hopes the days off spark LF Brandon Bufton.  At the beginning of last week heading to Saskatchewan, Bufton was batting .325.  Currently sitting at .246, here's a vote of confidence that the weekend will go well and the average breaks the quarter century mark.

NUGGET

The Prospects have two batters who have earned more walks than strikeouts.  They are 2B Cody Kielsa (5W 4K 18AB .278 AVG) and IF Chase Kuehl (6W 5K 45AB .267 AVG)

So Close

Our Edmonton Prospects (5-12) would fall just short last night at Telus Field losing to the Moose Jaw Miller Express (8-11) by the score of 9-6.

Our Prospects would open the scoring in the 1st inning when RF Ethan Sterkel would single driving home CF Grant Glasser.

After Moose Jaw put up three runs in the second inning, our Prospects would get one back in the third.  DH Chase Kuehl with the sacrifice fly to plate SS Kevin Czarnecki.

Down 5-2 going into the bottom of the 5th, our Prospects would cut the lead to one.  With one out, Moose Jaw would turn to their bullpen for help.  A wild throw to first base cashing in Prospects 1B Markus Fergusson probably was not the in the masterplan.  That same at bat, Prospects C Jarryd Klemm would earn his first RBI of the season with a groundout scoring 3B Cody Kielsa.

Coming out of the 7th inning stretch, our Prospects were down 6-4.  Markus Fergusson, who deserves a pat on the back for an outstanding game going 4-5, would triple earning himself an RBI to top off his night.  The still hot Ethan Sterkel would cross the plate on the plate on the play, Sterkel most definitely earns a pat on the back for  what has been an 18-27 stretch at the plate the past week!  Cody Kielsa would then drive in the game tying run.

Alas the game would slip away in the Top of the 8th, all with 2 outs to add salt to the wound.  The Miller Express would score the last three runs of the game.

NUGGET

Our Prospects would steal an AMAZING 10 Bases during the game.

NEXT GAME

Tonight versus the Okotoks Dawgs (9-7) in Okotoks.  First pitch at 7:05.

Scheduled starter for your Prospects is Markus Fergusson (1-0 3.97 ERA).  In Fergusson's last outing, he pitched a complete game shutout versus Yorkton.

The Dawgs hold a 3-1 series lead thus far this season versus our Prospects.

Wild night at the ball park!

Your Edmonton Prospects (5-11) won their 2nd extra inning game of the week defeating the Moose Jaw Miller Express (7-11) by the score of 6-5 in 10 innings.

Prospects Starting Pitcher Craig George would go 8 and 1/3 innings, earning himself a pat on the back for a strong performance!  George would spread out 9 hits over his 8 innings of work while being charged with 3 runs.

The Prospects quickly got back the 1st inning run allowed by George, when leadoff batter CF Grant Glasser doubled and then 5 pitches later was singled home by SS Kevin Czarnecki.

During the 3rd inning, Prospects fans unknowingly saw an act of foreshadowing as 3B Chase Kuehl would score on a wild pitch.

Our Prospects would bump the lead to 3-1 during the 4th inning when Czarnecki would earn his 2nd RBI of the game with a 2-out single scoring DH Matthew Miller.

Now down 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, Czarnecki would single, steal 2nd base then advance to 3rd base on a wild pitch.  LF Brandon Bufton would drive him with a sacrifice fly and off to extra innings we went.

In the bottom of the 10th, down 5-4, this is when the game got wild.  Prospect pinch runner, Jarryd Klemm would score on a wild pitch to tie the game.  Two batters later, Miles Shelton Jr would score the game winning run on yet another wild pitch.

NUGGET

RF Ethan Sterkel continues to warrant nomination for the league's #stayhot rankings.  Following his for 3-5 performance last night, Sterkel is now batting .636 on the week.  To vote for Sterkel, simply "cut and paste" the following onto your Twitter page and hit submit - - > " Prospects Ethan Sterkel has gone 14-22 (.636) with 3 doubles, 3 RBI, 2 SB since June 19 #stayhot rankings via @WMBL"

NEXT GAME

The re-match goes tonight at Telus Field at 7:05 PM.  Stinson Ott (1-1 3.21 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for your Prospects tonight.

Onto the next challenge!

Sunday June 24th and Monday June 25th, your Edmonton Prospects welcome the Moose Jaw Miller Express to the friendly confines of Telus Field.  Both games start at 7:05PM.

The two teams alternated wins and loses versus each other last season.  The Prospects won their games by the scores of 14-13 and 6-5.

In last year's 14-13 win, Grant Glasser went 2-5 with a Walk and a Stolen Base to pace the Prospect offense.  In last year's 6-5 win, Andrew Mirasty would come in relief of Craig George and earn the victory.

For this Sunday's game, Craig George (0-1) draws the starting assignment for our Prospects.  It will be George's first action since the season opener on June 2nd.  Last season, George finished with 5 wins, 5 losses and a 5.34 ERA.

NUGGET

IF Kevin Czarnecki only 1 had start last season and it was against Moose Jaw.  The Edmonton product would go 2-4 with a Stolen Base.

Friday, June 22, 2012

Sometimes Goliath beats David

The Medicine Hat Mavericks (12-5) defeated our Edmonton Prospects (4-11) by a score of 6-1.

Prospects Starting Pitcher Cashtyn DeLeeuw (1-2) shut down one of the leagues most potent offenses until the 4th inning.  While the Mavericks were able to score three runs in the inning, an effective pitcher's memory must be short and Deleeuw was effective on this night going 7 good innings.

The David versus Goliath the title eludes to is in regards to the starting pitcher for Medicine Hat.  Billy Martin (3-1) came into the game with an ERA under 1.00.  So you knew the sledding was going to get tough(er) after our Prospects scored in the bottom of the 4th inning.

DH Jamie Mitchell would double driving in RF Ethan Sterkel to shave the lead down to 3-1.  No other Prospect would pass 2nd base for the rest of the game.

NUGGETS

Ethan Sterkel's torrid week continues!!  Going 2-4 tonight, Sterkel has gone 11-17 since Tuesday!

SS Kevin Czarnecki saw his 7 game hitting streak come to an end tonight.

NEXT GAME
SUNDAY NIGHT VS MOOSE JAW
TELUS FIELD
7:05PM

Coming home a winner

Your Edmonton Prospects (4-10) have left Saskatchewan earning wins in 2 out of 4 games.  The 2nd win almost got away though.

With the Prospects leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the 7th inning, the team committed back-to-back-to-back errors allowing the Milllionaires to tie the game at deuces.  Prospects Starting Pitcher Chris Allen would settle for the no-decision but he most definitely deserves a pat on the back for an excellent game!!  Allen would spread out 6 hits, strikeout 5 and my favorite stat, walk zero!!

Prospect Relief Pitcher Tanner Knutson (1-0) would come into the game in the 8th inning and continue his befuddling of WMBL hitters thus far this season.  With 3 scoreless innings on Thursday, Knutson is now up to 8 and 2/3 innings of shutout baseball this summer.

The Prospects opened the scoring in the 2nd inning with an RBI single from 1B Matthew Miller.  In the 5th inning, RF Ethan Sterkel would put the Prospects up 2-1 with an RBI single of his own.

The Prospects would win the game by a score of 3-2 in the 10th inning when C Jamie Mitchell would knock in LF Brandon Bufton.

NUGGETS

One wonders if RF Ethan Sterkel will be sad to leave Saskatchewan.  Over the past 4 games, Sterkel has gone 9-13, with 3 RBI, 3 doubles and 2 stolen bases.  If you are on Twitter, please be sure to tweet about Sterkel's week using the #stayhot hashtag.

The flip side, two of the hottest Edmonton Prospects players leading into the road trip are likely very happy to be coming back to Edmonton.  CF Grant Glasser and LF Brandon Bufton, who are 1 and 2 among Prospects for most hits, look to continue their assault on the basepaths at the friendly confines of Telus Field.

NOTES FOR TONIGHT'S GAME
vs MEDICINE HAT MAVERICKS 7:05pm

The Mavericks (11-5) lead the league in runs scored, doubles and walks.  For as scary as that sounds, at least the Mavericks are in the lower half of the league in the Homerun department.

Cashtyn DeLeeuw (1-1) will be given the daunting task of being tonight's Prospect Starting Pitcher.  I am sure DeLeeuw can count on us Prospect fans to help "clap out" the Maverick offense.

Grant Glasser went 10-30 with 2 walks and an RBI last season against the Mavericks.

SPECIAL NOTE

Edmonton is a great place to live in part because their is always something big happening.  Just this past week, the city had a great concert and football game.

Let's try that again!

Sometimes you just have to pat an opposing player on the back for having a great game.  Millionaires 3B John Clark was a one man wrecking crew last night leading the Millionaires (9-7) past our beloved Prospects (3-10) by the score of 8-2.

Clark would break up Prospects Starting Pitcher Aubrey Dezarn's no hitter in the 4th inning.  Clark would then break up a 1-1 tie in the 6th with a solo Homerun and in the 7th, Clark would greet the Prospects bullpen by launching a 3 run Homerun to put this game out of reach.

Your Prospects would hit the scoreboard in the 6th inning.  With two out, 1B Chase Kuehl hit a double and then scored when RF Ethan Sterkel hit a double of his own.  A pat on the back to Sterkel who finished the game 3-4 with 2 stolen bases!!

In the 7th inning, C Dustin Sandberg hit his first Homerun of the season to close out the Prospects scoring for the evening.

A Look Ahead to Tonight's Re-match

Chris Allen (0-2) is penciled in to start tonight for your Edmonton Prospects.

A reminder that last season these two teams split their two game series, the game Edmonton won they won by 13!!

NUGGETS

The Prospects have not allowed a run in the 1st inning of  a game for 6 consecutive games.

The 2nd inning has been the most productive inning scoring wise for our batters.

REMINDER FANS
Your Prospects are back home this Friday to face Medicine Hat at Telus Field at 7PM.
Cashtyn DeLeeuw (1-1)  is penciled in to start for your Prospects!!

Prospects split doubleheader

Tuesday Game 1 vs Cardinals, 7-1 Loss

One stat explains away this loss, 5 errors!!

Prospects Starting Pitcher Stinson Ott would go 5 innings giving up only 5 hits but surrendering 6 runs all unearned.  Ott and reliever Brandon Compton would combine for the first game this season in which the Prospects did not issue a walk.

Two errors in both the 2nd and 4th innings of play aided in the Cardinals putting up three run spots in each inning.

Down 7-0 going into the final inning of the first game of the doubleheader, the Prospects would break the goose egg when Cody Kielsa grounded into a fielder's choice scoring 3B Chase Kuehl.

CF Grant Glasser's 9 game hitting streak would come to an end.

Tuesday Game 2 vs Cardinals, 4-0 WIN

One stat explains this win, in a 7 inning game the minimum amount of batters you can face is 21.  The Prospects would finish the game only facing 4 over the minimum!!

Edmonton native Markus Fergusson  would pitch the complete game shutout surrendering only one hit and two walks.  The last Edmonton Prospect to accomplish this feat was Tyler Dunsmore back on July 25, 2010.

For those fans on twitter, be sure to tweet about Fergusson's great performance using the hashtag #stayhot.  Each Tuesday morning, the league website (www.wmbl.ca) releases their "#stayhot rankings" chronicling the best players of the past week.

On the offensive side of the ball, 1B Chase Kuehl and RF Josh Kennedy (playing his first game since June 9) would  be the sparkplugs on this night.  In the 2nd and 4th inning, Kuehl and Kennedy would each single to start the inning.

In the 2nd inning, DH Matthew Miller would score Kuehl with a single while Kennedy would be thrown out at home.  In the 4th inning, 3B Cody Kielsa would single plating both Kuehl and Kennedy.

Kuehl was at it again in the 7th!!  With two out, Kuehl would collect his 3rd single of the night then PH Ethan Sterkel would double allowing Kuehl to score from first base.

TONIGHT

Your Edmonton Prospects (3-9) travel to Melville to take on the Millionaires (8-7).

Go Get'em Prospects!!

Monday, June 18, 2012

Cardinals, Millionaires and Mavericks oh my!!

Your Edmonton Prospects (2-8) begin a 4 game road trip tonight and tomorrow in Yorkton, Saskatchewan versus the Cardinals (4-7).  Of course, that is if Mother Nature allows the two teams to play!  For two consecutive years now, the series between these two teams has been washed out.

To prep you for the series, here is a comparison of each teams hitting totals so far in 2012:
  • Edmonton 10 Games, 48 Runs, 86 Hits, 3 HR, 40 RBI, 10 Stolen Bases, and a .249 batting average
  • Yorkton - 11 Games, 31 Runs, 75 Hits, 1 HR, 27 RBI, 8 Stolen Bases, and a .225 batting average
On Wednesday and Thurday, your Prospects travel to Melville to play the Millionaires (6-7).  Last season, the two clubs split their two games series.  The Prospects would win game one 17-4, their offense launched by a familiar name.  CF Grant Glasser went 4-5 with 5 RBI, a double and a triple.

Your Prospects then travel home on Friday June 22nd to face the Medicine Hat Mavericks (9-5).

NUGGET

Straight from the desk of Prospects Coach John Sutherland here is the penciled in starting rotation for the next 5 days:
  • Monday @ Yorkton: Stinson Ott (1-0 5.00 ERA 9 IP 2K)
  • Tuesday @ Yorkton: Markus Fergusson (0-0 8.10 ERA 6.2 IP 6K)
  • Wednesday @ Melville: TBA
  • Thursday @ Melville: Chris Allen (0-2 8.62 ERA 15.2 IP 13K)
  • Friday vs Medicine Hat: Cashtyn DeLeeuw  (1-1 8.47 ERA 17 IP 14K)

Dawg Gone It

The bright side, the bullpen pitched 4 scoreless innings allowing only 2 hits and zero walks. A pat on the back for Prospect Relief Pitchers Corey Gilligan and Tanner Knutson for shutting down the Dawgs potent offense.

Unfortunately, by the time Gilligan took the mound in the 6th, the Okotoks Dawgs (7-5) had built an 11-3 lead en route to the decisive 11-4 win over our Prospects (2-8).

The Prospects opened the scoring in the first inning when RF Ethan Sterkel singled home CF Grant Glasser.

In the bottom of the 2nd, after the Dawgs had put up 4 runs in the top half, Sterkel would collect his 2nd RBI of the game singling home DH Aubrey Dezarn.

The Prospects, showing no quit after the Dawgs put up 2 more in the top of the 3rd, would add another single run in bottom half of the inning.  2B Kevin Czarnecki, who had replaced starter Cody Kielsa, singled home starting 1B Matthew Miller.

In the 7th inning, refusing to go quietly into the night, the Prospects would score their 4th run of the night when replacement 1B Ryan Kosolofski doubled home LF Brandon Bufton.  Staying with the train of thought of refusing to go quietly into the night, starting C Jamie Mitchell was ejected from game after arguing balls and strikes with the umpire.

NUGGETS

In the bottom of the 8th, CF Grant Glasser singled to extend his hitting streak to 9 nine games.

RP Tanner Knutson is now up to 5 and 2/3 innings of shutout baseball for the Prospects.

Prospects let Dawgs off leash

I believe many baseball fans have heard the expression, "Pennants are not won in April, they are lost in April".  A lose translation of this saying happened Friday night at Telus Field.

The Prospects (2-7) would fall to the Okotoks Dawgs (6-5) by the score of 8-4.  Some of the credit for the fall can be pinned on the inability to capitalize with bases loaded early in the game.

The Prospects would load the bases in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th inning.  All the Prospects would have to show for it, 1 run scored on a double play off the bat of starting DH Jamie Mitchell.

Going into the bottom of the 6th inning, trailing 4-1, Prospects 3B Chase Kuehl took matters into his hands and hit a Homerun to bring the step back into what was a very lively crowd at the game.  Catcher Pierce Belaustegui would later double, then score when tagging from second to third as the throw went into the dugout (the Dawgs third baseman was blinded by the sun).

This would be as close as the Prospects would get as the bullpen struggled through the 8th inning giving up three runs putting the Dawgs up 7-3.  In the bottom half of the 8th, SS Miles Shelton Jr would knock in 1B Ryan Kosolofski bringing the Prospects back to within three.

Prospects SP Chris Allen put in a respectable outing.  Entering the 3rd inning having faced the minimum amount of batters, he danced his way through back to back bases loaded innings only surrendering 1 run. In the 5th inning, the ball danced away from the diving Prospects outfielder which plated two runs for the Dawgs.  In his last inning of work, Allen would effectively play the role of shortstop as he fielded two bunts as the Dawgs "small-balled" another run.

NUGGETS

CF Grant Glasser extended his hitting streak to 8 games while 2B Kevin Czarnecki extended his hitting streak to 6.

SP Cashtyn DeLeeuw (1-0) will be the Prospects Starter for Saturday night's rematch versus the Dawgs.  DeLeeuw's win was against these very same Dawgs back on June 8th.

5 Nuggets Prospects Fans Need to Know Going Into this Weekend

This Friday and Saturday at 7PM, the Edmonton Prospects host the West Division Champion Okotok Dawgs at the beautiful Telus Field.

Baseball fans in Edmonton have not seen our Prospects since opening day on June 2.  The following is everything you need to know about the club heading into this weekend.

1) CF Grant Glasser and LF Brandon Bufton are the only two prospects to play in all 8 regular season games.  Glasser is on a 7 game hitting streak and batting .355, while Bufton leads the team with a .367 batting average.

2) The Prospects have already played the Dawgs in Okotoks this season.  The teams split the two game series.  Starting pitcher Cashtyn DeLeeuw picked up the win for the Prospects while Aubrey Dezarn hit Homeruns in both games.  Also in both games, the Prospects had BIG 5th innings ( 7 runs scored and 3 runs scored respectively) so make sure you are in your seats during the 5th inning!!

3) Coach John Sutherland has submitted a different starting lineup for all 8 games.  RF Ethan Sterkel is the newest name to be penciled in the past two games and had an RBI double last time out.  CF Grant Glasser has batted lead-off for 5 games in a row now.

4) Kevin Czarnecki has three starts at second base, one start at shortstop and one appearance as a pinch hitter.  If you hear his name come over the PA, move to the edge of your seat!!  Czarnecki is hitting an incredulous .500 thus far on the season!!  He has had at least one hit in each game he has appeared in.

5) Along with Glasser and Czarnecki, here are the other Prospects currently on a hitting streak over two games:
1B/DH Markus Fergusson (3 gms), IF Miles Shelton Jr (3 gms), and C Jamie Mitchell (3 gms)

Prospects 7 Indians 4

The post-game tweet sent out by the Edmonton Prospects (@EdmProspects) after the series opener on Tuesday went as follows:
" 7-4 win in Swift Current tonight after a 10 hour bus ride!"

For the first time in the 2012 campaign, the Prospects were able to score runs in the 1st inning of a game.  Plus, for the first time since opening day the Prospects were able to plate a run in the 3rd inning of a game.  This game also marked the first time this season that the Prospects NEVER trailed.

Grant Glasser, who had already extended his hitting streak to 7, collected his 3rd hit and 2nd RBI of the game in the 8th inning with a triple that gave the Prospects back a 2 run cushion. Glasser later scored on a Brandon Bufton single (his second of the game) giving us what would be our final score.

Full marks for a gutsy effort by tonight's Prospects Starting Pitcher Stinson Ott, who in the previous Prospect game last Saturday pitched 4 and 2/3 innings in relief.  Ott would go 4 and 1/3 on Tuesday en route to the victory.

A tip of the cap to both relievers on Tuesday!!

Brandon Compton came in with two runners on, one out and a shaky one run lead but slammed the door shut.

Tanner Knutson earned the 3 inning save throwing a staggering 24 of his 30 pitches for strikes.

Weather permitting, series wraps up tonight,  Go get'em Prospects!!

Prospects Going to Swift Current

The Edmonton Prospects (1-6) travel to Swift Current for games on Tuesday & Wednesday against the Indians (3-3)

What was a tough first week of the season for the Prospects, there are bright spots to light the path ahead.

Grant Glasser is riding a 6 game hitting streak.  Kevin Czarnecki has hit in all 5 games he has played.  Also Aubrey Dezarn is on a 2 game HR streak (the only 2 HR's the team has hit).  In general, the two game series in Okotoks seemed to have awaken the teams bats as the team accumulated 6 extra-base hits to raise their season total to 10.

An area that needs to continue to improve is the pitching.  With an average of over 12 runs scored against per game, improvement seems to be the only way to go.  Bordering on the side of simply being a homer, one simply allows himself to believe that the inflated week one numbers are just that, inflated numbers!

As for the Swift Current Indians, they return home after a modest 2 game losing streak.  There most recent game was a heart breaking bottom of the 9th, one run loss last night in Medicine Hat.

Go get'em Prospects!!
